Dan Skoda sent in this photo of the Mount Katmai at anchor in Subic Bay in the Philippines when he was aboard her in 1963.  Dan was a Signalman in 1963.

Next to the USS Oriskany the Mount Katmai looks sorta small - then again the fast frigate looks even smaller!  This is March 1965 in the Pacific.
Captain Donald Engen1965, on the bridge of the Mount Katmai.  His youngest son, Charles, has supplied a good deal of the photos on this and other pages along with information about the Mt. Katmai.

In order to be included in the roster we need the following info:
Name, wife,  rate and dates aboard the ship, address and phone number
U.S.S. Mount Katmai, AE-16, Reunion: October 4-8, 2006

It is great to have all of your -mail addresses!  BUT.....
We could never mail a roster to any you because we do not have:
Name; wife's name; address; phone; years aboard the Katmai; and your rating at that time.
With all of this info we can then enter your name in the PRINTED roster.
We need the info even if you cannot attend the reunion in Reno.  Then you would be on our mailing list for the Christmas recap letter and calendar.

The following sent in by Dave Groebl - 1967 Cruise Book
A Note From Dave Groebl -

Phillip,

I have an official rubber stamped copy of the photo that was printed in the '67-'68 Cruise Book.  I also have the cruise book that gives a short description of the event.  I have included a copy of the photo and that page.  The damage shown was on the port side at #5 hold.  There was also about a 10 ft long "L" shaped hole punched in the side up forward, around #2 hold.  It was about halfway between the waterline and main deck.  It compromised one of our two fresh water holding tanks and therefore we lost half of our fresh water holding capacity.  This didn't get repaired till we returned to CONUS and went to the yards in San Francisco.  I could go on and on.  I think the most common reaction to the event, by those that saw it, was astonishment that we did not blow up.  We had 5" powder stacked right where the bulwark was mangled.  Some of the powder cans were crushed on one end.  There was also a large bolt of electricity that arced back and forth between the two ships.  It was contacting the Mt. Katmai right where the powder was stacked and subsequently crushed.  It was quite an experience and in some ways it changed my outlook on life.

No I'm not a member of AESA, but I will be soon.

Dave

Some time I'd like to write the story of the collision, from my perspective.  One thing I remember about it was that everyone saw some details that were unique to that individual.  In other words, everyone shared the experience but saw something different.

Phillip,

A small staff of guys put the cruise books together.  It was similar to a high school yearbook.  They took orders at some point and if you had your name on the list and paid a few bucks, you got one.  I came aboard too late in the '66 - '67 cruise to get one.  I didn get a copy of the '67 - '68, '68 - '69 and '69 - '70 cruise books though.  I don't know what happened after that.  I know of no extra copies anywhere.  I'm finding all you guys at once and it is a little overwhelming.  There's the AE Sailors Assn., The Katmai Assn. and reunions.  All these years nothing and now a huge network of contacts is developing.  It's fantastic!!!  I'll tell Jerry King about your site when I get back to him.  Ain't computers great?

We had a problem with the old computer here and decided to reformat.  Long story short, I lost all my addresses.  I had a fresh e-mail sitting here from you, so no problem, I can put you right into the book.  Others will be more difficult.  I guess I'll have to go to the sites and look around again.  My wife's addresses came through OK so I can get most of our family contacts and some friends from her.  The rest are just gone until they contact me again.  Ain't computers great?

Dave Groebl

This patch was sent in by Dave Groebl.  Actually worn by our fellow sailors in the late 60's!  Hope to have the story about it - shortly!
And, from 1968, a post card sent to Raymond Brackett while he was in boot camp from his close friend Danny Laurent while Danny was aboard the USS Mount Katmai.
After boot camp Ray served on the USS Rogers, DD-876.  Poor guy!  Couldn't get the GOOD duty!
