This was my time aboard the USS Mount Katmai.

I had just graduated from Radio School in San Diego in late December 1957.  I was a Radioman and had been assigned to join the Mt. Katmai after leave.  Captain Beyer joined the ship right after I did.  The Exec. was LCmdr Alonzo E. Belch.  In July of 1959 I was transferred to the Naval Communications Station at Guam.

Sharon Heard is looking for friends of her dad.  He reported onboard 16 November, 1957.  His name was Billy Dennis Conant, BM1 - E-Mail her.
Maynard Dykstra served on board 1950 to 1953.  He retired in 1972 and says the CO was Harris.  His friend was Dykes.

Robert Hawkins was on board in 1952 & 1953.  Engineman.  He remembers an A-Bomb being brought on board under Marine Guard.  He remembers the Hokabatan bar in Sasebo, Don Arseneau and Paul Hussy.

Halbert D. Shelby served on board 1952 &1953.

LeRoy "Sonny" Landaker served on board 12/51 thru 03/54.  1st Div.  Harris was the CO and was relieved by Capt. Gunn.  Shipmates were Johnston, Merritt, Ames & Tisdale.  Asks if anyone remembers the Shangri-La bar in Sasebo?  Remember when the Ashtabula blew up in Sasebo harbor?

Ross L. Jamerson served on board in '52 & '53.  He took the Boatswain Mate exam 3 times and infally decided the the engine room was the place for him.  The CO was E.E. Lord.  The Johnson family of Port Chicago took him and others in during one Christmas.

Bill Shaw is looking for friends that served on the Mount Katmai '53 to '55 ... like Robert Smith, Frank Nunez and "Hudson".

Rober Zink, FM came on board in April, 1956 while she was in the yard for repair.  He was SFM3 in the Repair Division.  Her girdle wasput on and the guns were removed.

Ed Frazier, IC3 was on board 08/57 to 09/59.  Remembers R.A. Pelletier RM1.

Richard J. Perosa served on board in 1958 and was an RM2.  Only on board for a very brief time.

Sam Vallance was on board '57 to '59.

George W. Parmeter served on board from '58 to '60.

Melvin Miller's wife, Sharlene, sent in this photo of the Big Kat at the outbreak of the Korean war.  Mel was a Radarman aboard her at the time.  He served on her from '53 to '55.

While I was aboard the Mount Katmai I heard tht she was the only ammo ship in the far east at the breakout of war in Korea.  The Mount Baker joined her a few weeks later and together they supplied our troops and ships.

Don Arseneau sent in this photo from November 1957 in San Francisco Bay.  Just before the guns were removed and her "girdle" was put on.
